Female worker, 64, dies after falling into mixing machine at candy factory in Hong Kong

A 64-year-old female worker died after falling into a mixing machine at a candy factory in Hong Kong on Monday.

Emergency personnel were called to the Superluck Industrial Centre on Sha Tsui Road in Tsuen Wan soon after 8.30am when the accident occurred. “A worker called police saying her female colleague had fallen into a mixing machine,” a police spokesman said.

The unconscious victim suffered rib and right shoulder fractures and sustained burns to her hands. She was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan where she died shortly before 10am.

A source familiar with the case said an initial investigation suggested the woman lost her footing and fell into the 88cm-tall machine, which was mixing sugar and water. She was the mother of the person in charge of the factory.

Police said the case was being treated as an industrial accident and the Labour Department had been notified. An autopsy will be carried out to ascertain the cause of the death.

The department said it had sent staff to the scene and was conducting an investigation.

Siu Sin-man, chief executive of the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, said her group had contacted the victim’s family members in hospital in an effort to render help.

She expressed concern over whether the machine involved was equipped with a protective mesh or cover to prevent people from falling in.

Siu urged the department to conduct a thorough investigation and prosecute those who failed to provide sufficient protection for workers.

The group urged employees to pay attention to safety at work. It said the company involved should provide necessary help to the victim’s family and, under the law, compensate those involved.
