Diego Maradona removed from FIFA 22 as 'legendary figure' less than two years after death

Football legend Diego Maradona has been removed from FIFA 22 less than two years after the Argentine icon's death.

Maradona featured on the game in its Ultimate Team section, where he had four FUT Icon 'cards' at various stages of his career. He was also part of the Soccer Aid World XI, available to use in the Kick-Off mode.

The legend is one of the highest-rated players in the game - and his highest card is rated 98 out 99. Only Pele, 99, is rated higher, while Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski's 'Team of the Year' cards are also rated 98.

However, due to a third party legal dispute, EA Sports have been forced to remove the Argentine icon from the game. EA Sports told the Mirror: "Due to a third party legal dispute, we must suspend Diego Maradona from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team Packs, future FUT content and the Soccer Aid World XI in EA SPORTS FIFA 22.

"As such, Diego Maradona ICON Items will no longer be made available in Packs, SBCs and FUT Draft. We have always included Maradona’s likeness and image under valid license agreements, first with Mr. Maradona himself and later with the company entitled to license Maradona’s image rights worldwide.

"We share our fans’ disappointment and hope to bring one of football’s greatest icons back in the game at some point in the future."
